These Drawing I examples show students progress after the first 8 weeks of Drawing I. During this time we focused on proportion and shading in charcoal.
Student 1 began the class drawing quite small. Her first drawings all only filled the very center of the page, leaving the rest of the page empty. She had issues with proportion, specifically symmetrical objects. Student 1 also struggled with correctly capturing the space between objects and correctly placing them on the picture plane.
Student 1 was given assignments which focused on enlarging her overall drawings, creating more dynamic compositions, and fine-tuning her proportions.
We found she shaded best using vine and compressed charcoal. Student 1 gained more confidence by first sketching her entire compositions in pencil before moving to charcoal.
